I’ve been to some lovely steak houses as I never cook it at home and I’d say that the steak here was one of the nicest (although I normally order fillet) and the sauce was incredible.

I enjoyed a single night's stay and dinner in the Gunton Arms. It is located in a quiet rural location, but easily accessible by road with ample parking. The building itself is quaint and historic but with some modern touches. The reception and restaurant/bar area were nicely themed with a good selection of beer. The food menu was extensive with something for every taste. My meal was excellent if a little expensive. The hotel room was sympathetically designed and decorated with very understated but traditional decor. The freestanding bath was a nice feature. We enjoyed a quiet and comfortable night's stay. The staff were all very friendly and competent, and being dog friendly made it ideal for us.

I ordered a sirloin steak which is cooked on an open fire in the “Elk Room” with chips and a peppercorn sauce and it was really tasty.

I was contemplating ordering another bowl of chips just to dunk in the sauce so as not to waste any. It really was that good!

Whilst I enjoyed the food that I ordered, it was very over priced and the menu made it out to be much more than it was. The fact that you have to pay extra for individual vegetables is unacceptable, and on both occasions that I've been, someone in the party has suffered food poisoning from the various seafood dishes. The menu itself is unstructured and the prices of the starters would lead you to believe that they were main courses. The food seems to be unseasoned and bland, and arrives in staggered intervals, meaning that the first part of your order (which is plated up separately for some reason) is cold before the second part even gets to the table. To top it off, the art which covers most of the walls is inappropriate for the setting. I have no opposition to "crude" art, however, it would be much more suited to an actual bar, than a family pub. To sum it up, the Gunton Arms is just a glorified pub. They charge top restaurant prices for average food and give it a fancy name to justify it. It was tasty, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to others and will not be returning in the foreseeable future.

There are artworks all over the walls, some of which are very odd. Two velociraptors having sex while a dragonfly looks on is rather out there. It all adds to the quirky atmosphere.

Others in our party had the chicken pie, the venison sausages and the pork chop. Everyone said their meal was very nice.

Went looking for pub to eat at 4pm, only jad bar snacks available as restaurant did not open till 6pm, however homemade wild mushroom soup from bar was fantastic. Great place, albeit a little difficult in wheelchair and no dedicated disabled parking. But all in all, a wonderful cozy place and will definitely return.

A beautiful hidden away treasure ! Beautiful grounds and how amazing it was to see the famous deer. Food was above standard and would go as far as to say it was restaurant standard at very reasonable prices. Lovely atmosphere and very friendly too. Thank you x
